In the hustle and bustle of shopping, pickpockets wait for moments when the attention of busy shoppers wanders. Nimble-fingered pickpockets can be found especially in places where there is a lot going on, such as crowded pedestrian zones, department stores or on public transport.

Pickpockets often work in group or at least in pairs

They frequently work in groups or at least in pairs – and each of them has a particular task. One distracts the victim, e.g. by asking the time or for a tissue, while the accomplice quickly reaches into the pocket or bag.

Protect yourself

How can you protect yourself from pickpockets? Here are a few helpful tips:

  • If you are carrying a handbag, make sure it is always closed!
  • Never leave your handbag unattended – it's better to carry your bag close to your body at all times.
  • Always carry your bag with the opening side towards your body – this makes it virtually impossible for someone to open it.
  • Only carry essential items in your bag in case you become a victim of a pickpocket at some time. In this way, your losses can be kept to a minimum.
